After Giving Birth

Notification of Childbirth

After giving birth, please notify your respective ward. Get a copy of the Birth Certificate from the hospital after the baby is born and submit the Notification of Childbirth within 14 days (within 3 months if born outside of Japan), counting from the day the baby is born.

Foreign nationals whose children are born in Japan are also required to submit the Notification of Childbirth, regardless of nationality.

Non-Japanese Newborns

In addition to submitting the Notification of Childbirth, you must apply for a Status of Residence (visa) if your baby has foreign nationality and will continue living in Japan. You are also required to report the birth to your home country so please check with your embassy or consulate. Upon submission of the notification, you will be issued 2 copies of the Certificate of Acceptance of Notification (fee applies). 1 copy should be used to notify your embassy of the birth and the other to obtain a status of residence from the Immigration Bureau. Please also obtain a copy of your child’s Resident Register as it may be required by the Immigration Bureau in some cases.

Passport Application

    Apply at your respective embassies

Application for Permission to Acquire Status and Period of Residence

Please complete the procedure within 30 days of birth at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau (there’s a Saitama Branch Office of Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau).

    * If you obtain your status of residence before submitting the notification of childbirth, you may also have to do a notification of residence separately at your Ward Community Service Division.

Maternal and Newborn Counseling Visit

After having your baby, a midwife or public health nurse will visit your home if you wish. They will check your baby’s height and weight and you can get advice on how to take care of your baby as well as ask about any health concerns you may have.

Interpretation service may be provided for the visit depending on your language. Please inquire at your Ward Community Health Center for further details.
