Description: |
At the time of this tree’s designation, it measured 13 meters tall, with a trunk circumference of 3.2 meters and a base circumference of 4.7 meters. Four large trees stand in a row that stretches from north to south between the temple gate and the main hall. Three of these trees, excluding the ginkgo, are designated cultural properties. This Castanopsis tree stands closest to the main hall. Its branches are concentrated on the north side because of its proximity to the neighboring Japanese torreya. When the temple’s main hall caught fire, this tree also suffered damage and its main trunk was scorched black. This has not affected the tree's growth and it is in good condition. However, in recent years, some of the branches were cut down in order to make way for the reconstruction of the main hall. |
