Kakebotoke (literally, “hanging Buddhas”) are usually fashioned from round tablets featuring a hammered relief or separately-attached figure of a Buddhist or Shinto deity. These gilded bronze pieces date back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333). There are four figures: Seated Thousand-Armed Kannon (Avalokiteshvara), standing 14.2 centimeters tall and 1.6 centimeters wide; Seated Kannon (Avalokiteshvara), standing 9.46 centimeters tall and 1.8 centimeters wide; Seated Yakushi (Bhaisajyaguru) Buddha, standing 8.78 centimeters tall and 2.7 centimeters wide; and Standing Kannon (Avalokiteshvara), standing 12.16 centimeters tall and 1.78 centimeters wide. The round backdrop panel has a diameter of 18.80 centimeters and a rim measuring 3 centimeters wide and .2 centimeters thick. These pieces were discovered in a field north of the temple during the late Taisho period (1912-1926). |
