Description: |
This 2.56 meter-tall hatted, square koshin pillar is topped by a three-dimensional sculpture of Shomen Kongo seated upon a demon. It was built in 1721 and consequently features the Siddham-script seed syllable (bija) for Shomen Kongo engraved near the top portion of the square pillar. The reliefs below depict two young boys who are being lifted by what is thought to be a guardian deity, with two chickens and three monkeys decorating the pedestal. The arrangement of Shomen Kongo’s image seated upon the hatted portion of the pillar is rare. This piece stands alongside the Koshin Tower of Tsuji as one of the few examples of this style within Saitama City. |
