Description: |
These implements belong to the lion dances formerly performed during Autumn Festivals at the Hikawa-jinja and Raiden-jinja Shrines (Kombacho, Kita Ward) as an offering in the hope of a plentiful harvest. In addition to the lion heads and tengu mask, which are said to have been restored in 1775, the tent, made of 40 tan (measurement for fabric) of cotton sewn together, has "created by Komba village parishioners during the August festival of 1856 " dyed within an aizome (indigo-dye) circle. The box that holds the lion heads also bears an inscription in ink from the same year. |
