Description: |
Dating from the end of the 13th century (late Kamakura Period), this image of Amida Buddha was made by joining multiple, separately-carved units together using a technique called yosegi-zukuri. The buddha’s eyes are inlaid crystal. The statue is 52.5 cm tall, with a total display height of 62 cm. Japan’s Amida Buddha is often depicted performing variations of the raigo-in welcoming mudra; in this image, he is shown making the jobon gesho-in (upper grade: lower birth) variant. The crown of the figure’s head features a three-dimensional protuberance (nikkei) marked with a small circle called a nikkeishu at its base. The third fingertip of the right hand and the hem of the robe are partially missing. |
